2. Please introduce yourself to the class.

3. ESSAY - INTRODUCTION
Please write some personal information about yourself and then briefly tell why you decided to study Biotechnology.

Before writing the first essay, it seems important to look at one of the most important ideas in organizing the writing of texts: the paragraph. Here's a nice explanation about paragraphs.

Now here's a special note related to paragraphs that deals with something that's possible in German, but not in English: I call them "sub-paragraphs".

Another little - but important - thing in writing is "commas". Using commas in English is a lot different than in German. Here's a nice explanation about commas.

4. Today's Links

BIOTECH LINKS

  • GLOSSARY (with listening sections)
    Click => Glossary of Genetic Terms
    There is a link to this site every lesson.

    It is a "Glossary of Genetic Terms" produced by the U.S. National Human Genome Research Institute.

    The glossary comprises a long list of genetic terminology, and many of the entries have a link where you can hear a member of the Institute's staff explain the term

    To listen to the audio files you need Real™ Player. Please click the icon to go to
    www.real.com, where you can download it.

    The Glossary also offers graphics that illustrate many of the entries.

    It's really an excellent resource.

  • Here's a link to the "Guide to Biotechnology" from the BIO organization in the US. It's detailed source of information about all aspects of Biotech that contains a LOT of information.
    Click => Guide to Biotechnology

  • GRAPHICS
    Click => http://www.accessexcellence.org/AB/GG/
    There is also a link to this site every lesson.

    This is part of the website called "Access Excellence" of the National Health Museum in the USA.

    The site explains that ...  "The Graphics Gallery is a series of labeled diagrams with explanations representing the important processes of biotechnology. Each diagram is followed by a summary of information, providing a context for the process illustrated."

    It's another excellent resource, and you should definitely look through the whole site.

  • NEWS
    Click => www.biospace.com
    There is also a link to this site every lesson.

    The site is updated daily with the latest news from the biotech world. In the top left corner of the homepage (see the blue circle in the image below), it says
    "
    FREE Newsletters".

    When you click on FREE Newsletters, a page opens where you can sign up for the various newsletters.

    If you are serious about learning English for Biotechnology, you should definitely subscribe to one or more of the newsletters.

    Here are two suggestions. The first one is especially interesting for people who might be interested in doing an internship or working in an English-speaking country.

    Career Insider - Weekly look at careers in the life sciences including: Who's Who (Industry personnel stories), regional Hotbed Hot Jobs, Special Monthly Guest Columnists, Top Stories for the Week, BioSpace HireHealth Career Fairs, Career Resource Center (books, magazines, reports, videos about developing your career), Career Tools.

    and

    GenePool - Daily summary of major life science industry news and feature stories from the BioSpace.com News Desk.

    To subscribe, just enter your email address and indicate which ones you'd like to receive. Then scroll down to the bottom of the page and click where it says

    When you click it, a new page will open where you can give them some more information, but it's not required.

    Even if you only read the newsletters once in awhile, they will certainly help you learn English. You'll also get the latest information about Biotechnology, not only from America, but from all over the world.
